Galeries Ontario / Ontario Galleries Presented: HOW GALLERIES CAN STRENGTHEN COLLECTIONS BY WORKING WITH ARTISTS
Posted On March 12, 2021

On Thursday, March 11, 2021, Galeries Ontario / Ontario Galleries hosted the workshop HOW GALLERIES CAN STRENGTHEN COLLECTIONS BY WORKING WITH ARTISTS. We were thrilled that we could present our innovative and incomparable professional development workshop to your screens, where you can learn safely from home! HOW GALLERIES CAN STRENGTHEN COLLECTIONS BY WORKING WITH ARTISTS Galleries are not able to exist without artists. Collecting is a direct way that galleries can support artists. It is a commitment to maintaining a work to industry standards, and it allows for the work to circulate in permanent collection exhibitions or on loan to other institutions. It is a way for it to be made available to researchers, and it is held in trust for the public and becomes a part of the community’s cultural heritage. However, it is widely known that the financial limitations of Canadian galleries impact their collecting practices. Galleries largely depend on donations for acquisitions into their collections, which favours art collectors over artists. |
Many gallery and museum collections become disconnected with not only their exhibitions and programming but also with the communities they serve. Acquisitions from only art collectors create a bias within the institutions and contributes to the systematic exclusion of marginalized groups in the sector. To diversify their collections, galleries will need to look towards other methods for building their collections. This workshop will look at how galleries can work with artists to strengthen their collection, offer alternative methods for collecting, and discuss the issue of donations from collectors versus artists.
